Flying on Friday the thirteenth was always going to be interesting. We were 10 minutes from the landing strip on Lord Howe when the pilot turned back for Sydney due to bad visibility and strong winds. The next day we tried again but the flight was cancelled. This gave us a whole day as tourists in Sydney.
We finally arrived in Lord Howe on the third day, and made the most of this extraordinary place. Brilliant walks, amazing birdlife, good food, and very quiet!
- there is usually something to draw
- waiting and hoping
- this banyan tree was about 100 metres from our cottage. Not the biggest on the island, but very beautiful.
- One of the world’s rarest birds posed for me for about 10 minutes right in front of our cottage.
- the dominating presence of Mount Gower
- Blackburn Island in the lagoon
- The franjipani tree in the garden as evening approaches
- From Malabar lookout (200m elev) there is a great view of the Admiralty Islands
- The banyan encapsulates the notion of growth in its form.
- a night at the Sebel Pier 1 was a real treat
- We learnt of the death of one of our great friends when we left Lord Howe. He did a lot of work on the lovely church in the Rocks, Sydney. We sat and thought of him.
- The Walsh Bay area is becoming lively and interesting with a good mix of housing, hotels and theatres.
Great sketchbook Stuart – thanks (an interesting trip)
Cheers
Chris with delays, weather etc.
